MCS Child Nutrition Office has received word that its application as a countywide Community Eligibility Program has been approved for the 2021-22 school year. All students in MCS have the opportunity to eat breakfast and lunch at school at no cost through CEP. The CEP was enacted as a result of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act and provides universal meal service to children in high-poverty areas. What does this mean for students? If benefits become available again this year through the Pandemic EBT, ALL MCS families now qualify for these benefits. Marion County is an equal opportunity provider.

Like businesses across the nation, the MCS Child Nutrition Dept. has been experiencing some outs and shortages from our suppliers. MCS will continue to substitute products as possible from our suppliers. If we have to change menus, we work diligently to try to give plenty of notice to students and families. Updates are sent through your child’s school as necessary. We appreciate your patience, grace, and understanding.

Mountain State Assessment of Trends in Community Health (MATCH) is a survey, similar to the U.S. census, designed to collect important health information specific to West Virginians. One in 14 West Virginians will be selected to complete the MATCH. Each selected West Virginian will have three options to take the survey: online, by paper, or by phone. Those who complete the survey will be compensated for their time. By completing the MATCH, participants ensure that their voices and the voices of their community are heard. Feedback makes a true difference, like helping policymakers and health officials better understand the reality of health in your community and providing the information needed to improve access to the health services you need. West Virginians should never have to miss doctor appointments or suffer through injuries without proper healthcare! Celebrate Freedom Week educates students about the sacrifices made for freedom in the founding of this country and the values on which this country was founded (WV State Code §18-2-9 ). In social studies classrooms, students will be learning of the Declaration of Independence, Emancipation Proclamation, and Constitution of the United States with an emphasis on the Bill of Rights. This includes the environments and the study of historical documents that inspired the founding fathers for the purposes of safeguarding our Constitutional republic.

Reminder FSHS parents and students, today, September 2nd, is picture day. Your student will take pictures during their English class. Students who do not take English at FSHS should come while they are on campus. Seniors, you're being asked to wear dressy clothes. If you forget or do not have appropriate clothing available, you can return on make-up picture day, October 4th, or we can accommodate that need. Thank you!

MCS will gather information about the levels of proficiency in English Language Arts and Math for grades 1 to 10 today through Sept. 17. This beginning of the year benchmark will help teachers plan instruction and interventions for the coming school year to recover instruction.

In the K–12 indoor classroom setting, a quarantine excludes students who were within 3 to 6 feet of an infected student if both the infected student and the exposed student(s) correctly and consistently wore well-fitting masks the entire time. We are excited for students to return in person beginning Tuesday, August 24th. As a reminder, we are in mandated mask wearing when students return. Please also have your student begin charging their Chromebook for use on the first day. Chromebooks need to be brought every day and be fully charged for use. Thank you and GO BEARS!

Given a review of Marion County trends in COVID-19 cases, in collaboration with the MC Health Department, MCS will extend the current mask mandate in all indoor spaces for all students and staff, regardless of vaccination status, to the end of the first semester. This mandate was originally in place through August 25 by MCS. It will be assessed regularly in collaboration with the MC Health Department, and it is our sincere hope that it can be lifted when local cases fall within acceptable levels.

Freshman orientation is here! Please drop your student off between 3:30 and 4:00 today along the back drive. Parents may return at 6:30 for a Q & A session. Masks must be worn by everyone on campus for this event. Anyone not wearing a mask will not be admitted.
